The Potion Masters has become a cult following among our guests and within the staff here at Wake Foot Sanctuary and we wanted to pull back the curtain a bit with one of the founders, Sylvan, to tell us more about their products.
The Potion Masters handcraft luxury, award-winning skincare in Canada. Launched in 2019 by Mother-Daughter founders Joy and Sylvan. They are passionate about bringing your skin the best that nature and science has to offer in its most concentrated form. The Potions are made with natural botanicals and with no extraneous filler ingredients. Many skincare products are made of up to 80% water along with fillers, thickeners, and texture enhancers to give the product substance. Potions on the other hand, contain ONLY ingredients that serve a purpose for your skin. These products are potent, luxurious, and remarkably effective because you are getting skincare ingredients in their purest form.
The Potion Masters products are 100% natural, using water-loving oils to capture water moisture from your tap, so your skin receives the same hydration as water-based skincare, without water (or preservatives) in the bottle. The lack of preservatives paired with the minimalist skincare philosophy means that you can leave your skin’s microbiome largely undisturbed.
Pam: We carry the Face Potion and the Luminosity and Bibbidi Spotibi Boo and they are so popular. Tell us more about your approach to product creation?
Sylvan: My Mom and I started The Potion Cosmetics in 2019 after decades of working in the skincare field. We have always had a love for natural and eco-conscious skincare, but noticed that it was difficult to find skincare that was waterless, natural, and that also contained the active ingredients that we were seeking. The skincare industry seemed to think that there were only two types of customers; ones who want natural products and don’t care about results, and ones who want results at any cost and don’t care about using natural products. We knew this simply wasn’t true. I became certified in Corneotherapy, Organic Chemistry, and Essential Oil Safety, and created products that combined everything that we felt was missing in skincare.
Bibbidi Spotibi Boo Pore Serum is a perfect example of where a natural solution can be the answer. Many products for acne-prone skin contain ingredients that can disrupt the skin barrier and increase sensitivity and redness. Bibbidi Spotibi Boo takes a different approach, using only anti-inflammatory oils, extracts, and essential oils to calm the skin. Many of our customers, especially those with sensitivity, love that these ingredients reduce inflammation and redness to calm troubled skin without drying it out.
Pam: What are the benefits of using a facial moisturizer + cleansing oil hybrid? And what makes a 2 in 1 product stand out from a more traditional cleanser and moisturizer?
Sylvan: We love to help people live a more minimalist lifestyle and part of that is simplifying the skincare routine. We created our Face Potions to act as both a Cleansing Oil and Moisturizer so that our customers can use less products, have less clutter in their life, and for ease of travel. Another benefit of this two-in-one product is for people with sensitive skin. By exposing our skin to less ingredients, we can minimize the risk of reactions. Because it is waterless and concentrated, we can use less product, and go through less bottles, making Face Potions a more eco-conscious skincare option.
Pam: Could you speak to the use of pumpkin seed oil and meadowfoam (what benefits does each hold for the skin)?
Sylvan: Two of the standout ingredients in Comfort Face Potion are Pumpkin Seed Oil and Meadowfoam Oil. Pumpkin Seed oil is rich and protective for the skin. It is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it the perfect soothing ingredient for dry, sensitive skin. Meadowfoam Oil is high in naturally occurring Vitamin E, and antioxidant that helps protect the skin from oxidative stress. Because Meadowfoam Oil has a light texture and is quickly absorbed, it works in harmony with the richer oils in Comfort Potion to create the perfect texture and finish.
Pam: For the Luminosity Potion – who is your targeted audience for the eye serum? Do you recommend using the serum in the morning or at night, or both for maximum efficacy?
Sylvan: Luminosity Potion is one of our bestsellers, and well-loved by anyone experiencing dark circles and puffiness around the eyes, or discoloration on the face. Cucumber and Black Cumin Seed help reduce inflammation, while Arjuna Bark Extract is known to firm and contour the look of skin. Our brightening complex of Licorice, Turmeric, Green Coffee, and Green Tea Extracts help brighten the appearance of the skin. Luminosity can be used as an eye serum both day and night for maximum effect and can also be used on any areas of the face or body where a brightening effect is desired.
