Portrait of a Foot Soaker: Maureen McDonnell

We love sharing a bit about our beloved foot soakers who grace us with their presence on a regular basis. This month we feature two of our favorite foot soakers, Maureen McDonnell and her husband H. Maureen and H are frequent guests at Wake. They either come in together for a date night or separately for some quality alone time. This sweet couple really knows how to pamper and take care of each other and we enjoy witnessing their genuine shared concern and admiration. We asked Maureen to share a bit about herself and her secrets to nonnegotiable regular self-care.

What type of work do you do?

I have been a holistic, nutritionally-oriented RN for more than 35 years. I’ve been organizing conferences on natural ways to keep children healthy since 1993 and am currently writing a book on Natural Ways to Raise Healthy Kids in a Toxic World.  My website Saving Our Kids, Healing Our Planet contains all of my articles on prevention and natural healing for women and children.

What things do you do to try and maintain a work/life balance?

Since 1977 I have been focused on healthy eating. My eating habits have ranged from vegetarian to plant-based Paleo. All along the way, I’ve done my best to avoid sugar and white foods.  I also exercise, meditate and practice positive thinking (probably the most effective health strategy of all!).

Do you have any favorite activities to help relieve stress?

Walking, getting a massage or foot soak and enjoying a fabulous glass of wine!

Who in your circle do you go to when you have a bad day?

My “go to” person is my husband H.  Of all the people I have ever known, he is the most centered, calm, uplifting and comforting person I know.

How does he make you feel better?

He listens, shares insights and inspirations and if all else fails, he gives me a foot massage 🙂

What is your guilty pleasure for me-time?

A glass of great wine, a piece of dark chocolate or a foot soak and massage at Wake!

Are there any spots around town that you find yourself drawn to when you need a mental break?

Oh yes, and they are in close proximity to one another…  The Battery Park Champagne Bar and Book Exchange, Sensibilities Day Spa and the Wake Sanctuary.

What is your idea of the ultimate self-care ritual?

I don’t do it often, but a full day spent at the Grove Park Inn spa definitely fits the bill!

Thank you, Maureen and H, for your continued support of Wake Foot Sanctuary and for letting our guests have a glimpse into your lives. We appreciate all our guests and look forward to featuring more portraits of guests in the future.
