Portrait of a Foot Soaker: Brenda Walker

We are on the last part of the portrait of a foot soaker series for this month. (Well, for now. We will be back periodically throughout the year with more glimpses into our amazing guests’ lives.) Are you feeling motivated by our guests to start adding in more self care into your life? We have been inspired by our guests’ stories of how they treasure self care and the different ways they celebrate it. This week we interviewed Brenda. This retired physical therapist centers her life around self care and really embodies the meaning of community which is essential to a rounded self care practice. Read on below for Brenda’s favorite ways to unwind.

What type of work do you do?

I’m a retired Physical Therapist.  After 43 years of full-time work it was time to “pass the torch.”

What things do you do to try and maintain a work/life balance?

I have a wonderful group of friends that we call “the tribe”.  We exercise together, participate in courses at OLLI – UNCA College for Seniors, practice Tai Chi & celebrate life events together.   It is so important to have a community of friends to uplift each other. I volunteer at the Leicester Welcome Table and the Arboretum.

Do you have any favorite activities to help relieve stress?

Walking is one of my favorite ways to reduce stress.  I love walking my dog and walking on favorite trails. I’m adding meditation to my daily activities.

Who in your circle do you go to when you have a bad day?How do they make you feel better?

Each person in my circle or tribe have unique qualities. The opportunity to share life stories and events together helps me feel better. The variety they all bring to my life is truly a gift.

What is your guilty pleasure for me-time?

My daughter & I love the opportunity to travel together.  We always try to plan a “spa-adventure” to do what we call “marketing research”.

Are there any spots around town that you find yourself drawn to when you need a mental break?

I have enjoyed many opportunities in town for massage, meditation & of course, “I love coming to WAKE, foot sanctuary”.

What is your idea of the ultimate self-care ritual? (either something you currently practice or a fantasy)

My fantasy would include a monthly spa visit and weekly massage therapy.

Thank you, Brenda, for your continued support of Wake Foot Sanctuary and for letting our guests have a glimpse into your life. We appreciate all our guests and look forward to featuring more portraits of more guests soon.
