Self Care Tips for the Holidays

If you have been following Wake for a while, you know we are all about the self-care. We are constantly thinking of ways to ensure that our therapists and staff remember to rejuvenate their spirit regularly. We wanted to share a little bit of our wisdom on how to bring that practice into the busyness of the holiday season. It’s so easy to get caught up in the obligation of the holidays, the hustle and bustle of gift shopping, parties and spending time with family that your own needs are often neglected. We believe the holidays are an invitation to practice even more self-care! So we invite you to read on and give yourself permission to focus on you this holiday season.

Here are 5 tips to rejuvenate your spirit during the most magical time of the year!

Set the intention to complete acts of kindness.

This goes beyond the normal gift-giving that happens over the holiday season. Spontaneous acts of kindness can quickly bring you back to the spirit of the season. And when you can make someone’s day brighter by giving from the heart, that will do so much to feed your spirit exactly what it needs.

Carve out some time to really enjoy this season.

We can get so caught up and pulled in many directions and obligations that we forget to set the intention to enjoy it. And before you know it, it’s January 1st and the whole holiday season has passed you by in a blur. Some simple ideas to be in the present moment and to cultivate a little happiness: Bundle up (if it’s cold where you are) and go for a walk and take in the decorations, lights, and season’s natural beauty. Create a holiday retreat in your own home and allow yourself to bask in the warmth of the lights. Make a warm festive beverage and create a sacred time to connect in with what the holiday season means to you.

Set clear boundaries.

We invite you to the practice of saying no to things that don’t feel aligned with what you want. You don’t need to respond yes to every holiday gathering or cookie exchange. Don’t overextend yourself to the point of exhaustion and don’t be afraid to say no to certain invitations that feel like an obligation as opposed to something you truly enjoy. Spend some time envisioning how you want to spend this holiday season, make a plan, and stick to it. Your spirit will thank you!

Practice gratitude.

The holidays can bring up so many emotions and less than festive feelings. If you find yourself in this space create a gratitude practice. Each morning write down 5 or more things you are grateful for. Sit in the feelings of how these things affect your life. No matter what is going on around you, you can always come back to this practice and it will immediately keep you grounded and at peace when the hustle and bustle factor gets overwhelming.

We hope you found some takeaways that will support you during this time of year and beyond. Feel free to post ones that you resonate with and let us know how you are doing. We would love to hear from you! Happy Holidays from everyone at Wake Foot Sanctuary!
